Background of the study
Religious leaders in Nsukka wield significant influence over the socio-political landscape, particularly during election periods. Their positions as trusted community figures often allow them to shape electoral decision-making by endorsing candidates and mobilizing voter support (Nwosu, 2023). In Nsukka Local Government Area, where religious institutions hold a central role in community life, the opinions and directives of religious leaders can sway public perceptions and voting behaviors (Okoro, 2024). These leaders frequently integrate moral and ethical considerations into their political endorsements, which may resonate strongly with the values of their congregants (Chukwu, 2023). However, the involvement of religious leaders in political affairs also raises questions about the separation of religion and state, and the potential for biased influence that undermines democratic processes (Eze, 2024). Recent studies indicate that while religious leaders can contribute positively by promoting civic responsibility, their interventions may also lead to political polarization and reduced accountability (Obi, 2023). This study appraises the extent of religious leaders’ influence on electoral decision-making in Nsukka, critically examining both the benefits and risks associated with their involvement.

Statement of the problem
The active involvement of religious leaders in electoral processes in Nsukka poses challenges to the integrity of democratic decision-making. While their endorsements can mobilize voter participation and provide ethical guidance, concerns arise over the potential for undue influence and partisanship (Adebayo, 2023). The blurred boundaries between religious persuasion and political campaigning can lead to biased electoral outcomes and diminished accountability among political candidates. Furthermore, the reliance on religious authority in political matters may marginalize alternative voices and perpetuate existing power imbalances within the community. These issues necessitate a critical examination of how religious leadership impacts voter behavior and overall electoral integrity in Nsukka Local Government Area (Olu, 2024).

Objectives of the study:

  • To assess the influence of religious leaders on electoral decision-making in Nsukka.

  • To identify the benefits and challenges associated with religious interventions in politics.

  • To propose measures to ensure balanced political engagement in the community.

Research questions:

  • How do religious leaders influence electoral decisions in Nsukka?

  • What are the positive and negative impacts of their political involvement?

  • How can the influence of religious leaders be balanced to promote fair electoral processes?

Research Hypotheses:

  • H1: Religious leaders significantly influence the electoral decisions of voters in Nsukka.

  • H2: Their involvement creates both mobilization benefits and challenges to electoral fairness.

  • H3: Regulatory measures can help balance religious influence and democratic integrity.

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it explores the role of religious leaders in shaping electoral outcomes in Nsukka. The research will provide insights for policymakers, political stakeholders, and religious communities, informing strategies to safeguard democratic processes while respecting cultural values. By identifying the dual impacts of religious involvement, the study contributes to a balanced understanding of political engagement in contexts where faith plays a pivotal role (Ifeoma, 2023).

Scope and limitations of the study:
The study is limited to evaluating the influence of religious leaders on electoral decision-making within Nsukka Local Government Area, focusing exclusively on the interplay between religious authority and political processes.

Definitions of terms:

  • Religious Leaders: Influential figures in religious institutions who guide the spiritual and sometimes political views of their communities.

  • Electoral Decision-Making: The process by which voters choose political candidates and determine election outcomes.

  • Nsukka Local Government Area: An administrative region in Enugu State known for its active religious and political engagement.
